So you started your blog on WordPress.com because it was free and now you want the ability to control more of your site and add in the plugins that you want. To do this your best bet is to move into a self hosted plan where you have total control over your blog or website.
WordPress.com gives a couple options to do this and to see these options you will need to go into your Dashboard of your WordPress.com website and navigate to the Tools menu where you will find Export. This is what you are looking for…
You can see the two options here, one is free and the other is $129. Your decision should be based on how comfortable you are with hosting plans and importing your information into the new plan. With the free option, it probably won’t give you all of your images that you have added into posts or images from your site. On the paid version, you have the option of using their partner hosting plans which are on Bluehost, HostGator, DreamHost, or GoDaddy. We have used all of these companies and they are all good options to host your new blog; so the choice is yours. BlueHost or GoDaddy would probably be our top picks out of those. If you are doing the migration yourself, both of these hosts have simple WordPress installers built in to make it easy to get your base WordPress installation ready to import your content.
So if your comfort level is pretty high in installing WordPress and importing your content, the Free option is the way to go. If you want more of the hands-off option, paying the fee to have it transferred for you might be the better alternative. In both cases, those are the steps you need to take to move your WordPress.com blog to a self hosted plan.
